Mouthwatering Movie Snacks You Might Not Have Thought Of

Share the Story

Everyone loves to watch a  good movie at home. We watch after a hard day at work, or when we just feel like chilling and relaxing on the couch.

Most people, regardless of where they are from, enjoy their snacks while watching movies. Often, you will only realise that the bowl is empty when your fingers touch nothing but the bottom of it.

While popcorn makes a great movie snack, there are other movie snacks that also go really well while watching a movie at home. Here are a few of my African favorites.

Achari and Mabuyu

“Achari” are mangoes that are cut up into strips, coated with flavoured food colouring and then dried in the sun. When you bite on them, you get this sweet, tangy taste and a chewy texture.

“Mabuyu” are baobab fruits that are also coated with food colour, sugar, and sometimes chilli. These fruits are nutritious, so you don’t have to worry that you are eating unhealthy food.

Nuts

A variety of nuts also go well with movies and keep your mouth busy. From cashew nuts to groundnuts, honey-coated macadamia nuts…  I could go on and on! A cold beer to wash it down will be perfect.

Crisps

Cassava crisps, potato crisps, matoke (dried banana) crisps, arrow root chips, these all go really well with a  guacamole dip. And then there is chevda, a spicy mix of delicious nuts and crisps.

Deep fried Cassava sticks and Potato Fritters (Viazi vitamu)

There are also these fried cassava sticks served with chilli and lemon, and potato fritters that are boiled, cooled, cut in half, stuffed with a little bit of chilli powder, dipped in batter, and finally deep fried and served with tamarind dipping sauce. Can’t get enough of these when I’m down at the coast!

Sandwiches

Nobody wants to get up after getting that nice position on the couch. A sandwich that will get me through the movie without having to go back to the kitchen for more is perfect. Three slices of bread, some mustard, bacon (or ham), fried egg, and avocado, all put together to make one incredible toasted sandwich that melts in your mouth.
